Globally Harmonised System

New labelling standard

The Globally Harmonised System (GHS) is a new method of labelling and classifying substances and preparations. It will replace WMS, which is based on EU regulations, in Europe from 2015.

This international, unambiguous system is based on "UN recommendations" and has the same structure and system as WMS, but the classification criteria are not quite the same. The GHS symbols will have to replace the orange European hazard symbols and the corresponding American symbols. By the end of 2010, all substances must be classified in accordance with the GHS, so that from that time on, preparations can also be classified according to the GHS. Between 2011 and 2015, the old system will be gradually phased out in favour of the new one. The consequences are that the material safety data sheets will be completely transformed.
